What is Toning and How it Helps us Resist Muscle Loss

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

As we get older our body naturally loses muscle tone but regular resistance exercises help delay this process. If we don't use it we lose it. So let's learn how to use our muscles!

Toning is what we do to gain strength and keep the muscles firm!

Now here is a basic of idea of what muscle tone is! It's your body's ability to have springy and firm muscle fibers that can support the body under stress, resist gravity, and support posture.

The purpose of muscle tone is more than simply having nice muscles. Toned means giving greater strength or firmness so we may stand taller, maintain healthy bones, and feel strong! Here are a few tips on how toning and strength training can benefit your life.

Tip #1 - First we fuel the engine

Eating a well balanced meals so the body can build and maintain muscle is essential to your body! A high protein diet, with lots of leafy greens is a great way to fuel the body! Remember Popeye? He was always pounding back the spinach! It's no myth that spinach and other greens like kale and broccoli are great choices!

Tip #2 - Using weights or resistance

Well honestly, before you start an exercise program consult your doctor and a coach! Your doctor will tell you whether weight training is right for you. If you haven't exercised in a while a coach can get you started on a program that will progress as you grow stronger. The best way to increase tone is with weight / resistance training. Even body weight exercises, like chair squats, plank or wall push-ups can build your stamina! Start slow, and think quality of exercise over quantity!

Tip #3 - Attend a class or hire a health coach

I've been in the fitness industry, training and teaching for more that 35 years. I always have a coach, or a class I practice with to ensure I'm training right for myself. This is something I recommend for everyone. As an instructor or coach in class, I'm offering safe and fun ways to train my clients! They see results and to feel their best. A coach can take you out of your comfort zone and that's when we really see the results!

Tip #4 - Drink plenty of water

Water is a game changer in terms of muscle tone! First of all water helps prevent cramping which can be very painful, and stop you from wanting to exercise. Second, our muscle are like sponges and they become more supple when hydrated. Finally, when you have plenty of water your body performs better and for longer! So drink up!

Tip #5 - Rest and Recovery

Yes I know what you are thinking, what does rest and recovery have to do with toning? When we exercise especially with weights, we are breaking down the muscle by creating little tears, and this is what causes soreness. The rest and recovery you get allows your body to repair the muscles to heal and become stronger as a result. Don't worry about a little soreness after your workout! Get enough rest, 48 hours is an ideal amount of time to push yourself again. While we sleep (7-8 hours per night) the cells are repairing and creating that tone we all want to see and feel!
